The story of USM is almost similar to the history of Balance Of Power. Singer and bassist Tony Ritchie and drummer Lionel Hicks were part of the first line-up of BOP. Guitarist Pete Southern is still a BOP member, and Tony Ritchie is even still a song writer for BOP. Both bands go musically more or less into the same direction. I'm not familiar with BOP and this is a USM review, anyway. Normally I don't like melodic like very much, but USM's debut pleased me already during the first listening. The opening song 'Beneath The Low' is a heavier track with great harmonic vocal lines. Other songs are more melodic and have even a commercial touch (Believe it or not), without being annoying. Even more quiet songs (The Weird And The Wonderful) and groovy ones (Terrorphobiac) belong to USM's big repertoire. Luckily, there are no boring ballads on this CD which is an excellent Hard Rock album. Fans of the early Aerosmith, Extreme or King's X will like this contemporary Rock album, free from any Metal clichés. |
