One and a half years after their debut, Ruination from Lituania have released their second album 'Xura'. As their gig in Luxemburg with Apocalyptica and Desdemonia was very convincing, I was of course eager to listen to the new songs. And I have to admit that I'd not been disappointed. Comparing the new material to the songs of 'Visionary Breed', I have the impression that Ruination have in general become more melodic. Anyway what they play is hard to classify, but it's a mixture of Metal and Gothic. On the new CD the keyboards have a greater importance than it had been the case before. This doesn't sound annoying at all and they give for example a song like 'Long Way' a real retro touch. Another strong point is again the excellent production, but this isn't surprising as the songs got recorded at the famous Abyss Studio and got of course produced by Peter Tägtren. I shouldn't forget to mention that Ruination have one of the best Metal singers who's able to give each song a personal note. The only disappointing song is 'Vision Thing', a cover version by The Sisters Of Mercy which turned out badly. But the most important impression is that Ruination have done a musical development and that 'Xura' is much more than just a simple copy of 'Visionary Breed'.
