Moshquito started 15 years ago in the former German Democratic Republic and had to face a
hard time under the Communist regime, which is the reason that they released their first
CD only in 1998. Now, 3 years later, and after a label change from the alternative Noiseworks
to the metallic Morbid, Moshquito might finally get the attention they deserve. To keep it simple, it is purest thrash metal that the East Germans are playing, but it takes more than one quick listen to determine the amount of excellence in their music. Most of the songs sound like old school thrash, reminiscent of the late 80ies thrash boom, and works really well with speed bombs like 'Do What You Want' and 'Hunting Demon'. But there is more to Moshquito than that, which they show with the mid-tempo title track. My favorite track is the atmospheric 'Liquid Killer', which shows off fantastic rhythm guitar work and a spine-chilling chorus. Now of course there are also some backsides to this otherwise excellent album. First, it is nice and everything to be rooted in the 80ies (which was the time when I started listening intently to heavy metal, but in a time where bands like Fear Factory, VoiVod and mostly Slipknot show that you can play modern metal without sounding like a typical clone, one might expect more originality. But then that's just a detail because I prefer a good old-school album to a mediocre new metal album any day of the week. A more pressing point is the style of the lyrics, which on the first album were also a major problem. Moshquito's English is full of Germanisms, and even if I don't notice that kind of stuff while listening (as English is also a foreign language to me), it's hurting my eyes to read the lyrics. Still, Moshquito recorded a well-made album, and deserve to be among us another 15 years. For more information, check out their homepage. |
