Chicago is a cold city and crowded at the same time. My brother once told me it's very
easy to get lost at their airport. So you shouldn't expect too sunny sounds from that
metropolis of the north-east. As most people only have Al Bundy in their minds when
thinking of Chicago, or cute schizophreniacs like Wesley Willis chanting their
big city ditties, old school death metal band Disinter face the dreariness of the
city in a much more relentless way. With a take no prisoners mentality, their now
second album "Welcome To Oblivion" hammers ten attacks of purest violence
to the audience's ears, and it's hard to think of any more aggressive band at the
moment. Dying Fetus maybe, but Disinter have the advantage of being more accessible,
maybe because their music contains a lot of thrash elements... just listen to the
8-minute epic track 'Field Of Screams'. If Exhorder hadn't evolved into a wimpy
alternative band, but instead had walked consistently on the path of brutality,
they might sound today the way Disinter do. Most death metal bands today don't
convince me too much, as it is too hard doing something new after Death, Morbid
Angel, Obituary, Dissection and countless other bands have been there before, but
Disinter might be the one band you are looking for. Absolutely great stuff this is, no doubt about it, and if every song were as rich as the aforementionned 'Field Of Screams', I would have given this CD the maximum rating, but still you get the best death metal in years, ranging from doomy slo-mo riffs over thrashy late-Eighties sounds to grinding speed parts. I love it! Get this CD and don't forget to visit the band's excellent homepage. |
