In early 2000, I first came in contact with Chief Mart's, one of Luxemburg's most unusual and
strangeest bands. Their debut CD was already very convincing, and the new one with the bizarre
title 'Cosmic Hope Indian Eskimo Fellowship' is again a masterpiece. As on the debut, Chief
Mart's are not writing and playing 'real' songs (with chorus and refrain), but wonderful,
dreamy instrumental landscapes of Ambient music. The members of Chief Mart's admit to be
heavily influenced by bands like Ozric Tentacles or The Orb, but first it's not easy to play
like that and secondly there's no similar sounding band in Luxemburg. The songs structures
are quite weird, sometimes very chaotic, sometimes relaxing, and I think that this unnusual
mixture will make it quite hard to many people to get familiar with the sound of Chief Mart's.
The lack of vocals is never disturbing on the whole CD as the music has a hypnotic and even
bewitching influence on the listener. A difference compared to the debut is that the songs have
become much shorter, but are still far over the average playing time of other bands. Friends
of Ambient, Electronica, Eub and Psychadelic really should give a chance to those four very
gifted musicians. The sound on this CD is exceptional when you consider that the whole CD got recorded on 4-track in two months at the home of two of the musicians. If you'd like to know how to obtain this CD, have a look at Chief Mart's homepage. |
