Relapse have been releasing quite a few interesting grindcore records lately, and even if not all that shines is gold, the majority of their releases are not only surprisingly good, but also very original. Cephalic Carnage are one of those new millenium grind band who call their musical style Rocky Mountain Hydro-Grind! Yes, these boys are from Colorado, and who would expect an extreme band from that part of the World? Maybe it's the huge mountains and the cold Winters that pushed this band into creating such a destructive soundscape, but who cares, because "Exploiting Dysfunction" is a CD that can be enjoyed across the borders. Musically close to their labelmates Today Is The Day and Dillinger Escape Plan, Cephalic Carnage are on the first level a typical grindcore bands who loves to show off hyperblastbeats and schizophrenic vocals, but on a second level they introduce a lot more subtle elements like Slo-Mo Death and above all virtuous jazz elements. It's mostly the latter which give the music a depth you see more and more often these days. Grindcore is no longer a style for the musically depraved, but has developped into a new kind of progressive metal, but instead of showing off their skills, these people play songs that kick ass and are technically perfect. Maybe Cephalic Carnage are not yet as crazy sounding as Dillinger Escape Plan and not as apocalyptic as Today Is The Day, but that doesn't mean by no means that this is easy listening. I enjoy listening to every minute of the 14 first songs, only the 15-minute-long title song is a bit hard to bear. By the way, the CD contains 66 songs, and there's a hidden bonus track at track 23. Beware the Illuminati!
