BENUMB
Withering Strands Of Hope

32 songs / 24 minutes
Relapse / Suburban
- 8 -

One of the very few bands these days where the average playing time of a song is below one minute... This should be already a fair warning to all friends of elaborate songwriting out there. Benüb take no prisoners, that much is for sure. They started out in the mid-Nineties as a dedicated underground hardcore band, and although I had no opportunity to listen to one of their many 7-inch vinyl releases, their now 2nd full-length (well, 34 minutes only...) CD 'Withering Strands Of Hope' is one mad album. 32 songs, and most of them the most ferocious possible grind core, with a heavy political touch that makes the anger in this music even more tangible.
So where are we to put these 5 guys in comparison to other grind core bands? Maybe Benümb are not the most original band on Earth, but the production of the CD is raw and straight in your face, there's no time to get bored with an average length of 45 seconds, and on one song ('Years Of Unjust'), the bands shows that they also know how to play sludgy sounds, which then is also the reason why this song hails in on nearly 4 minutes. Still I prefer their grindy material. No politically conscious hardcore or grindcore fan should let this CD unnoticed, although I secretly wonder why so short albums are marketed as full-length albums these days...
