In 1997, I first came in contact with the Beefeaters who had been one of four bands on a sampler called 'Hard Of Hearing 2'. They sounded uninspired, boring and somehow unmature. Two years later their first full-length-CD which is simply called 'Q' has come out. It's a play on words as the cover shows a cow and in German, you read this like that letter. My expectations weren't of course very high, but I was much surprised listening to the musical output. The Beefeaters are surely a Pop band, but their music has more distortions than before. Just listen to the opener 'I'm In Doubt' and you can hear out that they are still very melodic. One of my favourite songs is 'Horse' which has a lovely tune that goes easily into your ears. But most songs show that it's not an impossible thing to combine keyboards, noisy guitars and a melodic voice. 'Once We've Been As One' reflects this mixture very well. It's quite surprising how many progress The Beefeater have done in the last two years and so it isn't a surprise that they've gained the second prize at a regional German song contest. They are Noiseworks' best Pop act (I prefer them to the Watchfools) and I think that they deserve a bright future as a band. So I don't understand why the CD's last track is such a sad instrumental song. |
